Beginner
A complete beginner appears to have a supported route through the club boats programme rather than general public walk-up sailing. The club says its Sonatas are used for introducing new and less experienced sailors through taster sessions and training, with experienced skippers leading two-hour sessions in suitable weather. Use of the club boats requires WMYC membership, but the club has introduced a four-month Temporary Membership costing GBP 70 for people who want to sail but are not currently members. The wider club also presents itself as welcoming members and visitors, but general membership applications require sponsorship/committee process, so beginners should enquire before assuming immediate access.
Training
WMYC is an authorised RYA centre for shorebased and safety courses including Day Skipper theory, Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore theory, Yachtmaster Ocean theory, VHF radio, First Aid, Diesel Engine and ICC assessment for club members. The main RYA page says 2025/26 winter courses are finished and will start again on 5 October 2026, with registration from 1 August 2026. The club boats page separately describes practical sail-training sessions on Sonatas led by experienced skippers, maximum two crew, about two hours on the water plus launch travel time. Practical dinghy or beginner RYA Start Sailing courses were not found on the official WMYC pages reviewed.
Taster
The clearest try-sailing route is the club boats programme. WMYC says the Sonatas are used for introducing new and less experienced sailors through taster sessions and training, booked via WhatsApp groups after registering interest. Sessions cost GBP 10 per person per sail and crew should bring their own lifejacket, suitable clothing and a water bottle. I did not find a current public open-day page; an official Cadet Week event was listed for July 2025 but had expired.

Juniors
Family membership is available for couples and children, with the membership page advising applicants to ask the Club Secretary for details. Young people aged 8 to 17 may join as Cadets; the subscription PDF says Cadets are ages 8 to 17 and young adults in full-time education aged 18 to 25 may pay the Young Adult rate. A 2025 Cadet Week official event was listed, with entries via cadetweek.co.uk, but it had expired at time of checking.
Access· Unclear
I did not find a current official WMYC page confirming Sailability, adaptive sailing, disabled access facilities, or specific access-needs support at the club. The official events archive included a March 2026 winter forum talk on disability sailing mentioning the Woolverstone Project and a local Freedom boat making boating accessible to all, but that is evidence of a talk/topic rather than a stated WMYC accessible-sailing offer. Accessibility should be confirmed directly with the club before listing as available.

Published 2025/2026 membership subscriptions include Full single GBP 455, Associate single GBP 361, Crew GBP 204, Cadet/Young Adult single GBP 60, and Cadet/Young Adult couple/family member GBP 10. Full and Associate new members over 25 pay an entrance fee of 40% of the relevant annual subscription. Temporary Membership for club-boat access costs GBP 70 for four months and is non-repeatable. Club-boat sail training is GBP 10 per person per sail; Sonata racing is GBP 15 per boat per race or GBP 80 per boat for Mersea Week. Course prices found include Day Skipper theory GBP 255 members, GBP 295 non-members, GBP 150 ages 18-25; Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster theory GBP 240 members, GBP 280 non-members, GBP 140 ages 18-25; VHF SRC GBP 190; First Aid GBP 60/GBP 70 for DSC/WMYC under-18s/students/adults and GBP 65/GBP 80 for non-member under-18s/students/adults; Diesel Engine GBP 120.

WMYC provides three club boats for members: two Sonatas, Frank and Scherzo, and a Nordic Folkboat, Rio. Use is member-only, including skippers and crew; non-members can use the Temporary Membership route. The official page describes sail-training/taster use, racing use, and Folkboat crew opportunities, but does not describe public visitor boat hire. Costs are published for sail-training use and Sonata racing, not a general hire tariff.
