SOYC confirmed on 27 July 2026 that no sailing experience is needed to join. Members use the booking system to find trips they can join without arranging their own crew; crews normally include four or five people, with someone available to show a beginner what to do.

Training

SOYC is an RYA Recognised Training Centre for practical courses, with RYA-qualified instructors and courses including Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper, Yachtmaster preparation, and in-house skills courses. The club confirmed that its two yachts are used for both internal club training and RYA courses. Shorebased RYA courses are signposted through Surrey Shorebased, run by a club member.
