John Lewis Partnership Sailing Club is a partnership sailing club with ocean-going yachts based on the River Hamble, offering cruising and training for members, including beginners.

Start

Can a beginner start here?

Yacht cruising, Offshore cruising, Sail training

Beginner
The official site says no previous sailing experience is necessary. Trips are led by fully qualified skippers, and skippers and crew guide participants so they can take an active part without being out of their depth.
Training
JLPSC says it is an RYA Recognised Training Centre running combined five-day RYA Competent Crew and RYA Day Skipper courses. Competent Crew can be done with little to no experience, and training is also described up to Yachtmaster preparation for people with the required prerequisites.
Taster· Unclear
No current public taster session, trial sail, or open-day offer was confirmed on the checked official pages. The 2026 sailing calendar contains ordinary sailing trips and some dated open-day entries that had already passed by 2026-06-12, so those were not treated as current taster/open-day availability.

Suitability

Juniors, families, and accessibility

Juniors
The club supports some family or guest participation: the homepage says members can book a spouse or partner and, at certain times, guests who are not Partners. The FAQ says full members can bring a guest sailing if they sail on the same trip, and friends or family members of a Partner may come as temporary members. The same FAQ says recreational trips are for over-18s only.
Access
The membership form says declared illnesses or medical conditions may not prevent someone from joining because the club promotes equal opportunities, but the Sailing Secretary must be told about potential safety issues. The 2026 official sailing calendar also lists future Blind Sailing Week (VST) trips. No fuller access guide or step-free facility information was found on the checked pages.

RYA Competent Crew / Day Skipper course prices are Partner or nominated beneficiary GBP 385 for Competent Crew and GBP 395 for Day Skipper, Guest GBP 610 for Competent Crew and GBP 620 for Day Skipper, with a GBP 50 non-refundable deposit. Membership

Official site says the John Lewis Partnership Sailing Club has five ocean-going yachts based on the River Hamble near Southampton and that no previous sailing experience is necessary.

Boat hire
The official charters page says the five club yachts are available for charter to individuals at competitive rates, but currently requires the charterer to hold a JLPSC Skipper certificate. No exact charter prices were found on the checked official page.
