Stokes Bay Sailing Club

BeginnerTrainingJuniors

Stokes Bay Sailing Club is a family-friendly Eastern Solent club at Gosport, with dinghy racing, cruising, cadets, broader watersports activity, and shore facilities including a galley, bar, showers, changing facilities, and dinghy park.

Start

Can a beginner start here?

Dinghy cruising, Dinghy racing, Sportboat / RIBs, Windsurfing, Personal watercraft

Beginner
The club explicitly says there is always someone to sail or learn with, runs Adult Sailing Evenings in summer for relaxed skill development, and says selected Friday adult sailing evenings include expert tuition for beginners and improvers. Cadets also state that no previous sailing experience is required for children or parents who want to join in.
Training
Training evidence found for club-run Adult Sailing Evenings: selected Friday sessions in summer offer expert tuition for beginners and improvers and are open to social and full sailing members. I did not find a current official listing for RYA courses on the site; RYA references found were racing-rules related, not course provision.
Taster
Cadet prospective visitors are invited to turn up on a Saturday morning to see what Cadets is about or ask cadet parents questions. I did not find a current general adult public taster session or open-day booking page; adult sailing evenings appear to be for social and full sailing members.

Suitability

Juniors, families, and accessibility

Juniors
The club has a Saturday morning Cadet Club for members as young as 6, usually May to September from 1000 to 1200, run by parents. It says no previous sailing experience is required for children or parents who want to join in, parents must stay and help, and cadet activities other than Cadet Weekend are free for cadets and family members. Family and youth membership categories are listed.
Access
The open-events local information states there is a large accessible toilet available for child-and-parent or private changing, but says there is no shower in that facility. I did not find fuller information about step-free access, adapted sailing, hoists, accessible parking, or support for specific access needs.

Prices

Membership prices are published: Family Membership GBP 391, Adult Membership GBP 263, Youth Membership GBP 114, Watersports Membership GBP 97, Social Membership GBP 85, and Social Partner GBP 30. The membership year runs from 1 February and a 2.5% discount was listed for fees paid before 1 March 2025. Club boat booking rules list GBP 7 for single-handed boats and GBP 14 for double-handed boats. Club hire prices are also published, but they relate to member facility hire rather than sailing participation.

Membership

Official site describes new-member options, a family-friendly club, cadets, cruising, racing, watersports membership, galley, bar, showers, changing facilities, and storage.

Boat hire
Club boats can be booked through WebCollect for GBP 7 single-handed or GBP 14 double-handed. Use is first come, first served; boats may only be used when an SBSC patrol boat is on the water; the borrower must have enough skill to right a capsize and sail safely for the conditions, with a cadet-learning exception in controlled cadet activity; booking must be by someone over 16; and users must hold full sailing membership or cadet membership. Cadets page also says the club has boats available for cadets without access to their own, for cadet activities or club racing.
