South Shields Sailing Club

BeginnerTrainingJuniors

South Shields Sailing Club is an RYA-affiliated club and training centre sailing from River Drive on the River Tyne, with dinghy racing, cruising, youth courses, windsurfing and powerboat training.

Start

Can a beginner start here?

Dinghy sailing, Dinghy racing, Dinghy cruising, Windsurfing, Powerboat training, Navigation training, Youth sailing

Beginner
The club says everyone is welcome and specifically invites people who are completely new to sailing. It suggests open days, RYA Level 1 or 2 courses, club boat hire for members, or crewing with another member as routes for new sailors.
Training
South Shields Sailing Club describes itself as an RYA Champion Club and recognised training centre. It says members can access courses in dinghy sailing, powerboating, safety boat and first aid, delivered by RYA-qualified instructors, and the join page mentions RYA Level 1 or 2 courses as a beginner route.
Taster
The club says it runs open days where potential members can look around or try sailing. A taster/open-day page invited members of the public to try sailing for free on Sunday 26 April 2026, but that date is now past as of this check and I did not find a future dated taster session.

Suitability

Juniors, families, and accessibility

Juniors
The club describes itself as family orientated. Its facilities page says the 3rd South Shields Sea Scouts are attached to the club, giving youngsters an opportunity to start sailing from an early age, and its sailing page says summer youth events are organised. The membership rates page also includes junior and family/non-sailing membership categories.
Access
The facilities page says the clubhouse has disabled facilities, including a changing room and a lift to provide access to all floors. I did not find detailed access information for pontoon/launch access, parking, sensory needs, or adaptive sailing support.

Current membership rates are published on the official member site. Examples visible in the rendered page include Adult Member annual cost GBP 44.50 with the category name stating it incurs a GBP 116 sailing fee, Adult Member family/non-sailing annual cost GBP 44.50, Student Member annual cost GBP 44.50 with the category name stating it incurs a GBP 39.50 sailing fee, and a Junior Member category stating it incurs a GBP 21.50 sailing fee. Club boat hire events show a GBP 10.00 cost. I did not find a simple public price table for courses or tasters on the main site.

Membership

Official site confirms the River Drive location and contact route; RYA directory lists the club as an RYA Club and Training Centre with dinghy, youth, windsurfing, navigation, powerboat and first-aid courses.

Boat hire
The join page says members can hire club boats. The facilities page says club dinghies are available for members to hire, including two-person and single-handed boats. The official member-site hire listings say Laser 1 and Laser 2000 dinghies are available to club members, mainly to help new members get afloat and build skills, with visible hire events priced at GBP 10.00.
