The official site says Hostellers Sailing Club suits all levels of sailing experience, including complete beginners, and its page for people new to sailing says the club is ideal for those new to any sailing who want to try with minimal initial investment. It says members do not need to own a boat, can use club boats, and can borrow spare buoyancy aids while getting started. It also says experienced members are willing to explain what beginners need to know, and that prospective members with little or no previous sailing could learn the basics and gain experience by sailing with HSC.

Training

Training appears to be informal and demand-led rather than formal RYA courses. The official new-to-sailing page says a committee member acts as Training and Safety Officer, coordinates guidance for people new to sailing, and arranges training days as demand requires. The general information page says club boat crews must include at least one experienced member who has passed a simple club test, that the test is organised by the club Training Officer, and that HSC does not require formal RYA qualifications. I found no current official evidence of RYA courses or a fixed published training programme.
